Who Really Discovered America?
That sort of depends on what you mean by discover. The Indians, of course, were already here and did not need to discover it. They were in a position to be discovered by Europeans. The first Europeans to reach the Western Hemisphere were the Vikings who settled in Newfoundland around 1000 A.D. They seemingly did not realise just what it was that they had found though, a whole new continent, and did not have the resources to maintain their colony. They remembered it in their oral sagas and, as I understand it, Columbus had some knowledge of those stories and recognised their significance. He was the only one to do so though. Thus the Vikings "discovery" was almost forgotten by them and was unknown to the rest of Europe. Columbus was the first one who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean with the deliberate intent of getting to a specific place. He however, thought he had reached Asia and died still believing that. Thus he found the place and was able to tell the rest of Europe about it and tell them how to get here, but he never knew that he had actually found a place that was completely unknown to Europe before he got there. In the early 1500's European scholars gradually began to understand that these new lands were not Asia. Amerigo Vespucci was the first to use the term "New World" to describe South America. There is dispute about whether his accounts of his alledged explorations are true or not but they were published and popularised and his name came to be used for the New World although it would be inaccurate to ascribe solely to him the discovery of the fact that this is what these new lands were.

>_< you know i STILL only asked for a yes or no but w.e some of ur "facts" are right... some arent. also i asked about columbus.. NOTHING ABOUT AMERICA!
The truth...
Columbus.. he was a man who wanted nothing other than to serve the King and Queen of Spain. Wrong. He did not care about them but just of their money. He went to "Asia" looking for a faster trade route. What he found was Hispaniola, his first "discovery". Hispaniola is Haiti and Dominican Republic today. The second he arrived, natives greeted him with gold, food, and anything else he could imagine. Some natives thought that he and his army were gods. Most natives did not. They ran at the sight of his 3 ships armed with 90 men, all with muskets or swords. The ships, cannons. When Columbus took out his sword in "defense" of the Tainos(the natives of hispaniola) did not know of such objects. They grasped the edges of the sword and cut themselves. After that, they knew what they were here for.
Hispaniola... imagine an island filled with 3 million natives. All of them peaceful and in no need for weapons other than for food. Columbus asked for 6 men to start with. He took them as slaves. The next day he asked for gold and food... The day he left he took 7 men. Not 6 like he said before. The mens family's now have no father. Imagine losing your father to slavery. Just like Africans, they were taken away from there homes.
Back in Spain... Columbus brought the King and Queen riches and 7 slaves. The slaves died in days. Columbus and Spain now knew the Tainos were no good for hard labor. Columbus went back to Hispaniola, now with many Africans to gather gold and other resources.
Hispaniola again... because of Columbus's bragging, he was giving more ships and about 1,000 men. He set sail for Hispaniola's second visit of the "Gods" The Tainos knew not to trust the men of Columbus. Many fought back to rebel against them. All who rebeled were killed. Not only killed, but burned, stabbed, and ripped apart by ropes. For those who did not rebel, the same punishment, sometimes even worse. Hands chopped off, eyes cut out, feet ripped apart and off by dogs. A once highly populated civilization of about 3 million was now taken down to only 200. Those 200 were used as slaves and died once again from hard labor.
Today... many tourists to Haiti or Domican Republic ask, "If this island was populated by Tainos, where are they?".
The answer... gone... the Tainos have been wiped out. Could you possibly think of an entire race being wiped out. The jews were once almost wiped out. Over 6 million dead... but there are still millions of them. They are still alive. The Tainos, are not.
This is the truth... If you would like pictures, here are some. They are graphic, cruel and disgusting. And these are just some, not all... http://www.historyofcuba.com/gallery/E-Gallery.htm under the first picture on the left, click Start Here and view just some of the torture methods of the cruel Spaniards

As a matter of fact, the native americans have discovered America themselves. They came from Asia via the Bering Straight, which was mostly land and ice those days.
Edit: Sorry, only now did I see that JaX already posted this.
