So, it's time for a little update. A few months back I bought and started this little project. It is still unfinished but I have a bit more to show at least.
Been too cold for a few months and nothing really happened... but the sun has been out a bit recently and today was a good moment to get out in the garden and strip off...
some paint... Here's where this project is at so far!
These are the initial items I purchased. It’s basically a low budget, but actually pretty well made "Lancia Stratos Street Version 1974" made by a French company called Solido. The scale is 1:18. I bought some blue and black oil based paint, a bit of masking tape and a couple of decent brushes. My plan is to make a Vigi version of the Stratos. The Kingpin will come later.. I thought I'd try to make this first attempt as easy as possible.
Here it all is boxed up... (yeah yeah.. we have seen this.. )
Next up I got the little beauty out of its box. she squealed a bit but then began to purr a little.
And now separated from her safety cradle
Straps off!
. . .
Next up was to start breaking it down so that it could be painted with the vigi livery.
The white cover over the 'rally lights' was plastic and just popped off. This will not be needed for the interstate version. The lower front bumper is metal and had a couple of screws to remove it.
The entire chassis came off with a few screws and held the drive train etc, including working steering. The wheels have rubber tyres.
The dash, door panels and seats all popped off fairly easily.
the chassis:
Here I have also removed the seats and the lights from the front. I am undecided if I will have the lights on the final version or use some filler on the small bays where the lights fit then paint over it smooth. this will make it more difficult though. I have since removed all the glass and any remaining plastic parts.
. . .
And that is all that got done before the winter set in and I didn’t feel like going outside... until today!
so today I got out all this stuff again.
I had also bought some car spray paint too, a few weeks back. I tried to paint a bit of the white oil paint on the car but it looked like crap. This is really when I realised I needed to do a proper job on this if it was going to look good, and spray paint was the smoothest option.
I knew all winter that I would have to get outside and strip off the paint on the car in order to get a nice new coat on there. This is the reason for delay. Paint stripper is nasty shit at the best of times, let alone when you are freezing your ass off in a winter garden.
Time for the Red Paint to go!
Here she is today, being stripped down to the bare essentials!
She bubbled and fizzed... but knew it was for the greater good.
Just used a small paint bush and mainly let the stripper rip into it all. After taking these pics I decided to take apart the remaining pieces of the body. This made it easier to clean it out and get to all the red paint.
Flipped on her back and stripped bare.
I also bought a few small wire brushes today which were perfect for cleaning up the car afterwards.
I gave all the pieces a rinse in the sink then got to work with the wire brushes. this also had the added benefit of roughening up the surface of the pieces a little so they will be perfect for when it comes to spraying them.
Here are a few shots of the body, all ready to paint.
. . .
Once painted and the blue stripe added (lol.. that will be the deciding factor whether this is epic or not!) then I will put it back together and it's done.!
I guess I’ll get it painted any time between now and sometime soon...
