I don't think it will matter much in the future. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are likely going to be the last important physical formats for movies, much like CDs are the last one for music. Distribution is moving towards download at an amazing speed, for backups external hard drives are often the better choice given their price compared to a Blu-Ray burner (and a DVD burner will get problems as people get more and more data). At the moment, I wouldn't buy a laptop without an optical disc drive (yes, even though Apple just announced one), but in the future, I think any kind of data disc is going to go the way of the floppie.

Don't we all, every now and then, at least a little? As for piracy, well, the industry is already trying to restrict us with DRM all they can, and has been since the DVD, with some success, I might add. Steam, for example, shows how software can be distributed without discs at all and with copy protection that has, according to Wikipedia, not yet been cracked. Services like Steam, the iTunes Music Store and similar are going to get more convenient, both because the companies behind them work, and because download speeds increase.
I hereby predict that the disc that comes after Blu-Ray or HD DVD will be the last to gain widespread use. All later ones will vanish like the ZIP drive or the LZ120 drive, or the Super Audio CD.
