Well the psp and DS are in two very different fan bases. The DS will be a popular kids toy, as nintendo has always been. BUt for the more mature gamers market the psp provides. Most likely the psp will have most sales, as the ps2 did in the console market, with most profits(btw don't argue with that its a fact). the psp will have fans based on the ps2 fans mostly, whihc will provide the largest fan base of all.
*Each handheld will be popular to its own audience *Sony are most likely to have the highest profits

yes it does use different disks, a high cap UMD disk, but what exactly are u thinking of putting in a psp, it plays mp3 for music, and can store movies on it, but it would harldy be portable if it was dvd size, not to mention disk skip would be a problem when using a handheld on the move.
sony have no knowledge about how to make handhelds as this is there first try and so its not a very inovatice console, DS will be cheaper and most likely have more games (rare and nintendo make loads of games for it) and with the DS touchscreen will most likely make it sell better, unless people who dont know what they are doing go with sony becouse they think nintendo ga,es are for kids yet they never even played a nintendo game fully.

to be fair i looked at both the ds and the psp, in comparison, and i found the best site todo it was www.gamespot.com, whihc has pictures movies and specs of both.
Style : sony easily wins this as always, in the console market it was faced with a suitcase sized box and a little cube :S
Graphics : Again psp gets this one for having close to ps2 graphics, as seen on a woobly camera video of the psp in action playing need for speed. Whereas the Ds isn't really a huge leap, an old remake of ridge racer, looked like a slighly pixelated version of the first ridge racer on ps1.
Games: In some places the same games are being made. But each one has some games of its own the Ds has metroid prime, with quake 1 style graphics, and the psp has a very nice looking GT 4. All together there is a good variety for both the Ds and the psp. Although i still think the cartoon style games nitendo make are childish.(yet more pokemon games planned, ughhhh :S)
I belive this was a fairer way to choose between them, the battery life issue with the psp seems to have been solved with new technology, and the Ds touch screen seems to be a bit of a novelty, most games using it to display maps.
got to disagree with pretty much everything you said, sony psp is stylish!!? psst. As for games this is a handheld and so DS will get just as much support as sony will from 3rd part developers if not more due to specialised games amde for the touchscreen which is actually being used in clevel ways to give completly new game styles of play. I can understand why youd think nintendo games are childish but you really cant say that without playing through the main nintendo games, Mario, Zelda, metroid, super monkey ball and 1080 avalanche may look childish from the outside but each of these games are original in ther own right and are actually very long/difficult games. Graphics wise there isnt much between them, psp coming up with higher poly but lowerframerate/more expensive/shorter battery life. Basically i feel sony are yet again copying nintendos ideas and are in it for the profits whereas nintendo are trying to offer something new, original and FUN.
Nintendo's DS might win who knows the only Nintendo game i liked was this moon game... and on the other hand sony's PSP might win cause look a crap loads of PS2s' were sold in the yrs 03-04 and now they have craps o games

i guess its not worth argueing, but really do check the difference i graphics, btw the movie of NFS in psp didn't have low fps, and the new technology fixes the bettery life prob.
hmm seems your right about the graphics but we need to wait till there both released when developers really push the systems capabilities to make better looking games. Id still prefer a DS anyday though but i guess thats just becouse i am and always have been a nintendo fan and love the addictive gameplay they produce

psp sucks ass. just got to let you know that first. second, why would i want a mp3 player that lasts less than 4 hours when i have one that lasts up to 22 hours and 20x the ammount of space? secondly, the ds plays the older games from gameboy and gba. SM64 looks a lot better.
My NDS:
i also forgot to mention something else. the nintendo ds has a cool feature called ds download play. basically, it allows you you download the multiplayer software off of someone else's ds, and play with them without having to own the same cartrage.
also, one of its cool features is its WIFI capabilities. it allows you to play against people around the world. but you must be near a wifi internet. routers work i believe. i have not tried this yet.
