Hello, I just joined this forum today on behalf of my friend, (Disco)Naraku{I}. He has shown me this thread and what he has said in it, and I would like to try to help out the oblivious among this thread with the whole Furry sub-culture situation. It doesn’t seem like most of you actually understand what it is, and that you’re basing definitions on what you’ve seen through an images search, which is very misleading. I would like to take the time to individually respond to some of the posts made in this thread, but first would like to sort of explain the Furry, or Anthropomorphic sub-culture myself. Cochrane, you have done a pretty nice job on helping those confused out, but I would like to reinforce what a Furry is based on my thoughts and observations. As Cochrane has mentioned, ‘The exact definition varies widely and is mostly up to the one claiming to be a furry.’ This is very true. A Furry, as explained through a ‘normal’ person’s point of view would be someone that believes they have a special connection with a certain animal, such as mammals, feathered creatures, and believe it or not, even hybrids (such as a kangaroo/fox mix). But as mentioned before, the definition is really meant for the person that IS the Furry. It means something a little different to all of us. Also, unfortunately, a ‘normal’ person’s point of view on this sub-culture is also mixed in with the idea of a “very strange sexual fetish of ‘freaks’ that just want to hump each-other.’ Well, this is very inaccurate for a large amount of those involved in the sub-culture. Sure, there are some groups at conventions that do want to get intimately involved with one another, but that’s all most people focus on. Organizations such as Vanity Fair magazine and MTV have scarred the public, making people think that it is just some fur-fetish for ‘freaks.’ Well, sadly this is the work of an idiot and really doesn’t have much to do with being part of it. Not many realize that there are those called the ‘PG Furries.’ This group within the sub-culture are the ones focused on the passion and non-sexual fun based activities and events of the sub-culture. One example of this, for those of you who might question, is the act of simply meeting other Furries from around your area, or even from another country. Another event would even be selling artwork done by other Furries for profit, and no, I am not talking about the Furry-porn aspect of the artwork, A.K.A ‘furotica.’ That is in the ‘Mature’ section of the group, and will not be discussed here. Now to backup what I said about Vanity Fair and MTV, these are the articles that have put a bad reputation on the sub-culture. I cannot say that these are from primary sources, but they are long and convincing enough, despite the blatant disregard for professionalism in the MTV article:
You can tell right away just from the URL that the MTV page is about sex. The main reason the ‘normal’ population thinks that the sub-culture is just about sex is because that’s all people care about and companies know that it will sell. I hope that those of you confused realize this by now. I have read the whole report from Vanity Fair, it is basically a reporter investigating the sub-culture at a convention. It does do a better job from what little I have read form the MTV article, but it still of course, wants to focus on the sexual aspect, which is misleading. Also included in that article are some ‘hardcore’ Furry fans that really express themselves, and may be shocking and very misleading. So please, don’t even think for a second all are like this. Another thing in the Vanity Fair article to note is that others that are against it with false information have a say, which is quite harsh.
I’d like to now respond to some of the comments I read in this thread. First one I’d like to address is the member, RuBBa_cHiKiN. You seem to not even attempt to try to understand any of this, but I do admire you are having fun at the same time, even though the ‘Transformers’ remark you made might’ve mislead some of the other members here. Teabag, you have really caused problems in this thread in response to ‘what is a furry?’ Your speculation on what a Furry is really tells me that you have only used an image search-engine, basing your thoughts and definitions on that. Yes, Anime and the sub-culture do have ties, but that is not all it is. Bulletmagnet BME is an excellent example of the confusion you have created, and you even backed up your incorrect answer with: ‘lmao, no furry is a character style which is anime characters with furr which is used in eiter hentai or anime series of manga or movies.’ But thankfully Bulletmagnet BME eventually pushed himself away from thinking Furries were only that. As I read down you might’ve gotten it too after somewhat of clarification from Bulletmagnet BME, but that might’ve been just a tag-along. Onto Twi$ted Met@l. I may be wrong, but you seem to be one of those who have been miss-informed by sources such as the Vanity Fair and MTV articles I posted above. I appreciate you asking about the sub-culture at first, but the second post you made was completely off topic. ‘firstshadow’ also might be another example of this. Now onto the one called Phire. I see only two posts from you, and they are both pretty negative and cynical. ‘i just dont really get why we care, mainly... what you do on your own time.. with or without fur, doesnt really concern us... thats my take.’ This is fine that this is your take, but you really don’t understand the first reason why this thread was created. First thing to understand, in my opinion, is that humans generally tend to do things to impress others, and are afraid of making a mistake or failing in front of others as well. The fear aspect of this also applies. Some Furries don’t even admit they are one to the public openly until years after the individual found out they are one. Those years of suppression will eventually lead to open admittance, which is exactly what Naraku is doing here. Now I cannot say how long Naraku has been an Anthropomorphic, but I know some time has elapsed before this admittance. The second thing you said was about burning witches, and indirectly applying this concept to this thread and its ideas. Please, nothing like this is needed and it is only contributing to harshness.
I hope this has enlightened the individuals in this thread about a small portion of what a Furry is. Remember, there is no clear definition, only the definitions from the Furries themselves. There are only general views, and even lies that lead to misinformation. For those of you that would like a little more insight on the sub-culture, you can go to the site below:
As you can see from the Contents at the top, this page covers a wide variety of the sub-culture and can really help those out in need. It also talks about things that I have not mentioned or explained in full, such as ‘Fursuiters’ and the ‘Fursuit’ itself. I have said everything I have wanted to say, except this one thing that probably hit you right when you were reading this article. I do believe and consider myself a devoted fan of the sub-culture, and even have a bit of a ‘fursona’ figured out for myself, which includes me as a black Anthropomorphic Wolf. Thank you and I hope this has shed light on this whole situation.
