We shoud switch engine.
Source to be exact.
These days the vast majority of people (not all, slick) can run HL2 and the source engine pretty easily on their PC. There are zillions of tools, masses of support and all the answers thet you can Google to understand how to mod Source. plus it fits nicely with the Steam idea.
I would like to see anyone try and port Deathrace to the Valve engine.
That would open up the game to everyone. BF2 was and is not the right engine for IS82.. we know that. the physics suck.
Source is also very friendly for importing 3ds objects etc too and has all the lightning, self shadowing etc that we need to make it look pretty and up to date whilst allowing people with mid spec to fully enjoy it.
If you want a measure of actual contributing users here you can pretty much measure it by poll responses. 16 to the latest poll. and it was about 16 two years ago two.
i challenge someone to make a Deathrace Port for Source.

This has been on my mind periodically. The issue for me would be the challenge to learn how to code it all, but I need some sort of mentor or learning partner. This could be a summer project!

The problem you are going to run into is this: LAG. The source engine has awesome physics. But you are going to have to limit how much calculations the cars are going to require, because there were people who tried to make a racing mod for source. They ended up having to use the airboat instead of the car because the car generated too much lag. although this was on the original source engine, and several things have been improved for the orangebox engine, you still may run into some problems.
also, I forgot to mention, Since the source engine was designed for indoor maps, You might not be able to make as large of maps as before. Granted, the source engine can make large maps(as evidenced by mods like Eternal silence and Empires mod), but it wont feel the same 'openess' as you had with battlefield 1942 and BF2.
Ownage in the palm of your hand.

source is a good engine for modding, but as spaz hinted, it comes a bit too late. source has been out for a long time, and by the time the mod is developed, something newer and better than source might be released. this is just a prediction though
