Actually a nice trick is to buy the license alone (not the retail box) with Software Assurance .
That would get you your win xp, and then when Vista is released you only pay 23$ for the license media disc, and your license itself will transfer over to Vista

Edit : You may have to buy a few licenses depending on the reseller
