For college, I think you will get more out of a good laptop than a desktop. I bought a decent dell($1300) when I started college this year, and I barely use my desktop now. Also if you end up buying a name brand system, check if you get a school discount, we get like $200+ back form dell.

desktops for gaming because laptops slow down/overheat more. Laptops are small so the parts are compact so when they get hot, the heat travels nowhere but to other parts. Protons travel slower in warm areas thus a slower performance. Wow that's slot to type on an iPhone.....

Actually, silicone will conduct much better at higher temperatures - which is exactly the problem, as it may and will cause some transistors to work as if they're open even though they should be clearly closed. There are other effects, but all based on similar phenomena.
But you're completely right, you don't want a laptop to be too hot. Think about the "lap" in laptop for a while and you'll see why. My MacBook Pro certainly isn't the worst, but it gets rather warm already and I keep it away from my lap whenever I can. I didn't have that problem with my old, cheap and slow iBook.

what cochrane said. just cuz a laptop has all those expensive ATI ghx cards and quad processors in em doesn't mean that u won't get alot of heat. my dad's pentium 4 HT comp shuts down all the time cuz of high heat, cuz the comp needs more electricity to support the newer chips, which then produces more heat. my dad has to clean the fans in his comp every few weeks cuz dust collects in there very quickly. dont buy a comp based completely on how good it is, but rather buy it based on whether the fans can cool it good enough or not. if not, use an overclocking program such as rivatuner to increase the fan speeds, and then hope for the best, although u'll still have to deal with other problems when increasing the fan speeds such as a higher electricity bill, and the possibility of the fans not cooling enough even when tweaked to max power. like others here have been saying, buy a laptop for simple stuff like word processing, spreadsheet making, simple tasks like that. buy an expensive desktop for playing high ghx games like crisis or other comp heavy tasks. laptops for simple tasks and school, desktops for comp heavy tasks
edit: wow, i nvr realised how much i typed till i read it

Well, you can have an expensive laptop that's good for gaming as well, with acceptable levels of heat. But it'll cost twice the amount of a good desktop. Don't be fooled by so-called "gaming laptops" for $1000, they're cheating. $2000 is the minimum for a good laptop you can actually use as a good laptop. For $1000, you can still get a great laptop, but not one that's good for modern games.

You guys are completely right about a laptop's being hotter and alot more pricier than desktops, but for college portability is a must. Having a nice desktop is great, but sitting in your dorm all day just to use it is pretty lame.

thats true badfish... Cochrane.... my laptop runs Crysis... NUFF SAID!!!
For how long (on battery)? Not just Crysis, but in general. I can get four hours out of mine on light usage and low backlight, and I think this is the absolute minimum I'm willing to accept. And weight? 10 pounds? I'd certainly hate to lug 5 kg around every day. I already don't like lugging 2.5 kg around every day, to be honest. That's exactly what I mean: Cheap, Powerful, Mobile. Pick two.
