while upgrading a comp in my home, a ran into a problem, i can't figure out how to remove the heatsink so i can get @ the processor. been tryin to put a P4 in to replace the celeron, but i can't figure out how to remove the heatsink. my comp is a dell dimension 3000. help would be appreciated

er, dell doesn't make them impossible to remove, just a pain in the ass, speaking from experience, only help i can give you w/o pics is just look for hidden screws...

Its a 775 socket, and should have four "screws" around the base of the socket which holds the fan, BUT my guess is Dell did somethin fancy (useless) to the cooling on this one as well, so Google around.

probably stuck really tight with thermal paste stuff.. only solution is a hammer. you only have one attempt really so make sure you hit DOWN onto the heatsink with FULL FORCE. If it still wont budge then you have probably no chance but you can keep trying to STRIKE DOWN WITH FURIOUS ANGER directly on top of the heatsink.. Do this REPEATEDLY until you are tired.

"the hammer is the tool of the pikie" , the screws may be on the reverse side of the motherboard, which means u may have to take the motherboard out. Some pics would be good.
