For college, I think you will get more out of a good laptop than a desktop. I bought a decent dell($1300) when I started college this year, and I barely use my desktop now. Also if you end up buying a name brand system, check if you get a school discount, we get like $200+ back form dell.

2gb ram
m8600GT
160gb 7200 rpm HD
1440x900 screen
extended battery(get one, 4-5hrs)
